Everything you need to know about roofs

When we are speaking about the roofs, we can say that they have a long history. Some have even labeled a part of history, and you are probably familiar with some of them. When you read all these examples, we can say for sure that roofs have a long tradition in worldwide history. Because of that, in this article, we will speak about all kinds of roofs and about everything you need to know before you choose roof contractor.

Types of roofs

The basic division of roofs is according to the number of roof levels, so we have one-way, two-way, etc. In recent years, architects have also applied arch roofs that provide sufficient drop and full utilization of the building’s overall dimensions for as many square meters of usable space as possible. Also, the roofs can also be sorted by shapes – on flat and sloping roofs, upholstery or dome.

Sloping roofs mostly have a slope of 30-60° especially if the roof is made of tiles.

Flat roofs can be divided into three basic types: warm-level roofs, cold (also called reversed) roofs, and ventilated roofs. Ventilated roofs are made with the minimum of 8% of inclination so that the wind could flow from the edge to the ventilation openings on the ridge. The roofs of the buildings make up several basic elements:

The construction carries a roof cover and transfers loads to the lower parts of the building. Like walls, and roof construction can be massive (vaults and dome roofs, straw bales, earth or ceilings made of reinforced concrete) or made of linear elements (wooden, metal or concrete gratings, frames, classical or laminated wooden roof constructions, etc.). The substructure consists of auxiliary supporting elements which need to transfer the load of the cover (insulation, protective layer) to the structure. It does not have to be of the same material as the roof construction (for example, metal profiles for subcontracting can be applied on concrete beams). Roof cover is a part of the roof that directly protects the roof structure and the entire building from external influences.

Importance of roofing

It has been proven that the role of roof covering facilities around the world has a huge impact on global warming. Today, it is increasingly a case that we do not recommend materials that absorb heat and create the so-called hot isles. First of all, there is asphalt or black-insulated roofs that have far higher absorption power than concrete or tin roofs. Also, the color of the roof cover is also important, so the state of California has announced a rigorous regulation in relation to it – all roofs, on old and new buildings will have to be painted white or derived as green.
